New vs Used Pallets: Which Does Your Business Need?

One of the most common questions we hear from Dublin businesses is simple: should you buy new pallets or used pallets? The right answer depends on what you're storing, how often you'll reuse them, and how much you want to spend - here's how to think it through.
When new pallets make sense
New pallets are the safer choice when you need consistent strength and condition - for example, heavier loads, export shipments, or stock that needs to look presentable. Because every pallet is built to the same standard, you know exactly what you're getting with each one.
When used pallets make sense
Used pallets are usually the more affordable choice, and they're a practical option for general storage, internal handling, or short-term use where the pallet doesn't need to look new. They're also a more sustainable option, since they keep serviceable pallets in use rather than going straight to new stock.
Questions worth asking yourself
- How heavy is the load, and does it need a guaranteed weight rating?
- Is this pallet leaving your site (e.g. for delivery or export), or staying in-house?
- Do you need it once, or as part of a regular, ongoing supply?
- Does budget or appearance matter more for this particular job?
If your shipment needs to meet export requirements, it's also worth checking whether you need heat-treated pallets specifically, or a Euro pallet for standard European sizing - both are separate considerations from new vs used.
